Pay-to-quit offers: what $5,000 to leave really means

A new study says paying staff to quit lifts the performance of those who stay. Here is how to weigh a quit bonus against your own paycheck.

Some employers will pay you to walk out the door, and a new study says the idea can work for them. HR Dive reported on research in the Journal of Management Accounting Research that looked at pay-to-quit programs. This article looks at the other side of the deal: what a quit offer means for your own pay.

Was die Studie ergab

According to HR Dive, the researchers found two effects. Offers of money to leave pushed less committed employees out the door. And the people who turned the money down went on to perform better.

One of the study's co-authors is Kelsey Matthews, who teaches accounting and finance at Waterloo. She said most talk about incentives is about getting people to stay or work harder, so paying people to leave raised a real question about when it makes sense for a company.

The study describes the typical user as an organization that guards a strong corporate culture. In its own words: "These incentives encourage employees to take the money and leave the organization if they are not genuinely committed to their roles." The researchers also said the payments could help with quiet quitting, where staff do only the required tasks, and could flag new hires, whose training the company is paying for, who would leave quickly for a better offer.

Who already pays people to leave

This is not just a lab idea. HR Dive pointed to Amazon's program, called The Offer, which gives hourly warehouse and customer-service staff a yearly chance to quit for as much as $5,000.

Software company Trainual gives new hires a choice at the two-week mark: stay, or leave with $5,000. Trainual based that on a similar program at Zappos, which Amazon now owns.

Was das für Ihr Gehalt bedeutet

A quit offer looks like free money. It is really a trade. You swap a lump sum for every future paycheck from that job, plus the benefits attached to it.

Start with the simple comparison. Look at your pay stub and work out how many weeks of take-home pay the offer equals. That tells you how long the money would last if your next job took time to find.

Next, remember that a payment for leaving is usually treated as wages. That means it is normally taxed and may show up on your pay stub or W-2 like other pay. The amount you keep can be noticeably smaller than the headline number.

Then count what you give up. Health coverage, retirement matching, paid time off you have built up and any upcoming raise all stop when you leave. In many states, quitting on your own can also affect whether you qualify for unemployment benefits, so check your state's rules before you count on them.

Finally, look at the message behind the offer. The study says these programs are built to sort committed workers from the rest. Think about how you feel about the job itself, because that is the question the offer is really asking.

Fragen zu Ihrem eigenen Gehalt

Before you say yes or no to a quit offer, run through these questions.

  • How many weeks of my take-home pay does the offer cover after tax?
  • Do I have another job lined up, and does it pay more per hour once benefits are counted?
  • What benefits, matching or accrued time off would I lose on my last day?
  • Would leaving voluntarily change my eligibility for unemployment benefits in my state?

If the answers point to a better job waiting for you, the offer can act as a bridge. If not, the steady paycheck may be worth more than the lump sum.

Worauf Sie achten sollten

The study gives employers a research-backed reason to try these programs, so more companies may test them, especially for new hires. If your employer adds one, read the written terms closely: when the offer can be taken, whether it is paid in one check, and whether any conditions apply. Keep a copy, and check that the payment matches the terms on your final pay stub.
